West Maui Road Ride
The road around West Maui combines miles of scenic coastline that
ranges from arid beachland to rainforest. The 59 mile loop, from Iao
Valley Road and back to it, has a verticle rise of approx. 4'000'. I
like to do the ride in the direction of Wailuku south to Lahaina, Napili
and around back to Wailuku. By going in this direction, the frequently
strong trade headwinds can somewhat be avioded. The most challanging
section begins after Napili and runs to Waihee. Here you'll find a series
of hill climbs and plenty of nice curves in this very remotely settled area.
The road is mostly smooth all the way with bike lanes from Wailuku to
Napili, about 30 miles.
Kahakuloa looming in the background.
Century plants line this narrow downhill a few miles from Kahakuloa.
Maui road racer "Ziggy" Talifero keeping in shape for upcoming competition
in Europe. Despite having me around as an anchor, (picture and break stops)
we made the nearly 60 mile ride in less than 4 hours.
Just about 10 miles back to Wailuku amd almost all downhill.
