Lot of people from all around the world and even from Maui have asked, where that secret trail is. Its well known to motocrossers and many mountain bikers. I have given many tours on this trail and most ever person toured, ranked it as in the top 3 best ever ridden. Here's the way.
1. Get onto Kahului Beach Rd. next to the Maui Beach Hotel..drive past the harbor..(
2. Just past the 1 mile marker, turn right onto Waiehu Beach Rd at the lights (by the Taco Bell). Continue on this road for about 1.5 miles.
3. Turn right onto 330 and continue for .2 mile.
4. Turn left onto Malaihi (opposite Chinese cemetary)
5. Go up Malaihi about 1.2 miles and park on the left across from the 2nd "slow children" sign...that's what I do.
6. Pedal to the top of the road, approx .2 mile, pavement ends.
7. Keep going straight between 2 little streams for about 100 yards.
8. Turn right onto dirt road follow it for about .7 mile. (At about .5 mile the road divides..go right (most traveled road) a stream is on your left, it will disappear into the mountain. ( good for dip on the way back)
9. As you approach the trail head (on your left) you will notice yucca-like century plants growing on the hill side on your left.
10. At the top of the climb on a curve is the beginning of the trail. It is marked with yellow paint on the trees. Ya gotta climb up or power your bike up the beginning on the trail. (Notice motorcycle and mtb tracks).
Now that you arrived, here's what to expect. All distances are approximate.
through .5 miles..all up hill in a mixed forest
.6 miles enter guava forest
.75 miles...top of the hill
.8 dry stream crossing...careful or you'll bend your chainring (or crash)
1.0 mile..around giant tree in trail.
Keep following the pink or yellow paint on trees. the trail is generally flat meandering along the side on the mountain. Go left and you off the trail and maybe kinda lost. If you bail off the right side, you head toward the ocean and highway...can't get lost
1.6 miles dangerous rooty section just before a wet area caused by a leaky cement aquaduct.(see pic)
Plant life constantly changes. As the trail heads into the mountain valleys, it quickly goes from dry to shady and wet..all within just yards.
2 miles...a coupe of deep gullies in an open red dirt area...don't endo.
2.1 miles...a stream crossing......careful..if you ride it, your gonna get wet.
2.4...fertilizer tanks appear on your right.go right by 'em and cross the dirt road and go up onto the trail..marked with pink paint on trees.
2.5 miles..take a sjharp left up a steep loosed dirt hill..keep to the left and outta the rut if ya wanna make it. Yellow paint on a guava tree marks the turn to this hill.
3 miles...dry stream crossing...careful.
Just as you pass this dry stream you can either climb a short steep hill and come right down it again or walk over a cement waterway. (easier) follow the stream and .1 mile later your back on the main trail...which bears right.
4.3 miles...stream crossing (see pic, "1 of 4 stream crossings")
At this point you can turn around and backtrack to the beginning or begin another way out and back. Yhis is the other way back.
4.4 miles..another stream crossing....begin .5 mile singletrack downhill.
4.9 singletrack turns into a dirt road.
5 miles turn right and descend into mac nut grove...all on you left descend for about .3 mile. When the road "t's"..go right.
(if you go left, in about 1 mile, you will be on Waihee Valley Road (Swinging Bridges).
Keep going straight..follow the maid dirt road..Cook pines will be on the left.
Approx 6 miles..as you past a banana patch take a right. go about .2 mile
Hang a left and follow this road back to Malaihi Rd...about .5 miles.
Turn right an pedal up Malaihi about .6 miles back to the car.
In one of the drier areas...a short distance away, its wet.
Walking on the cement waterway to avoid a steep climb and descent (walk)section.
Hittin' the bottle after a hard run.
