Biking in Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Far into South Dakota's great plains is a wonderland of spires and miniature canyons, the results of geological deposits and erosion, Badlands National Park.

I came across a prairie rattlesnake on a dirt road but as I approached it, it was deliberately run over by a truck.

Because of the delicate natural formations, no biking is allowed on hiking trails. However, there are miles of gravel and dirt roads plus lots of smooth road riding available. Just be aware of the traffic that can get heavy in the summer and your cell phone may be out of range.

There are lots roadside view areas.

Looking southeast from a roadside viewpoint on Rt. 240.

This landscape is in a way, a preview of dramatic change to come. From the endless flat lands to the east.... to the nearby Black Hills and Rocky Mountains in the west .
