Just west of Kaupo the land quickly becomes desert like. This is
one of the newer bridges where the road usually was washed out after
heavy rains. The road from Kaupo to Keokea is about 27 miles long
and mostly uphill winding its way to over 3000' elevation. It will be the
route for the 6th Annual Rough Road Endurance Race sponsered by Island Biker.

Land that resembles the western deserts of the U.S..
The dark areas behind the puu (cinder cones) is lava from an eruption
in 1790. The island of Kahoolawe is in the background.
As you reach Ulapalakua Ranch (Tedeschi Winery) the "paved" road
finally smooths out. This view show the Wailea-Kihei area. 3000'
higher upslope from this site is the Kula Forest Reserve...singletrack!
